What I Actually Keep in My EV (and Why)

A simple look at the charging gear and small essentials that make everyday EV driving easier. No overthinking, just what ends up being useful in real life.

When I first got an EV, I did not think much about what I would keep in the car. Charging felt straightforward enough at home, and I assumed I would figure things out as I went. That worked for a while. Then plans changed, trips came up, and I started running into situations where having the right gear made a big difference.
Over time, I stopped guessing and settled into a simple setup. Nothing excessive, nothing complicated. Just a few things that quietly solve problems when they come up.
The basics I always keep in the car
The goal is not to carry everything. It is to carry the things that actually come up more often than you expect.
- A portable Level 1 charger for simple, reliable charging anywhere there is a standard outlet.
- A portable Level 2 charger for faster charging when I have access to a 240V outlet.
- An adapter to handle connector differences when charging options do not match the car.
- A small storage bag or case to keep everything organized and easy to grab.
That is it. No extra gear that rarely gets used. Just a setup that covers most real-world situations.
Why a Level 1 charger still matters
It is easy to overlook Level 1 charging, but it ends up being one of the most dependable backups you can have. If you are staying somewhere overnight, visiting family, or parked for long stretches, a standard outlet is often all you need.
It is not fast, but it does not need to be. What matters is that it works almost anywhere and does not require planning ahead. That kind of flexibility is hard to replace.
When a portable Level 2 makes life easier
A portable Level 2 charger fills the gap between slow charging and public stations. It is useful when you have access to a 240V outlet but do not want to rely on finding a public charger or waiting in line.
This comes up more than you might expect. Rental properties, garages, and even some workplaces have the right outlet available. Having your own charger means you can take advantage of those situations without depending on anything else.
Why I keep an adapter in the trunk
Charging standards are still evolving, and not every charger matches every vehicle. Most of the time, that is not a problem. But when it is, it can slow you down quickly.
An adapter is one of those things you rarely think about until you need it. Then it becomes the difference between plugging in immediately and having to change plans. It is small, easy to store, and worth having for the flexibility alone.
Keeping things simple and organized
One of the easiest ways to make charging less frustrating is to keep your gear organized. A basic storage bag or case prevents cables from getting tangled, keeps connectors clean, and makes it easier to grab what you need without digging through the trunk.
It is a small detail, but it makes a difference over time, especially if you use your gear regularly.
What I do not carry
It is just as important to know what not to bring. There is no need to overload your car with equipment you rarely use.
I do not carry multiple chargers for the same purpose, and I do not bring anything that requires extra setup or constant attention. If something does not make charging easier or more flexible, it does not stay in the car.
If you are just getting started
If you are building your setup for the first time, keep it simple. You do not need to solve every scenario right away.
- Start with one reliable charger that fits how and where you normally park and charge.
- Add a second option only if your routine calls for it for example, a faster setup for busy days or a backup for travel.
- Keep an adapter on hand so you are not limited when connector types do not match.
Most drivers find that a simple, dependable setup covers the majority of situations. You can always add more flexibility later if your routine changes.
Why this setup works
The goal is not to have the most gear. It is to have the right gear. A simple combination of a Level 1 charger, a portable Level 2, and an adapter gives you flexibility at home and on the road without adding unnecessary complexity.
Once you have that in place, charging becomes something you do without thinking about it, which is exactly how it should feel.
